Leading independent pub companies in the UK 2017, by number of pubs This statistic ranks the leading independent pub companies in the United Kingdom as of August 2017, by number of pubs owned. Ei Group plc owns the highest number, with 4,296 pubs across the UK. This is followed by Mitchells & Butlers plc, with over 1.6 thousand pubs. Pub industry in the UK

Public houses, or pubs, are a big part of British history and culture, not only as drinking places but as social and community meeting points. Due to various factors, many pubs have struggled to survive and the number of pubs in the UK has been in decline. In terms of pub ownership most pubs are still owned by a pub company or a major brewery.

In the industry there are three types of pubs: managed pubs, leased or tenanted pubs and free houses. Managed pubs are owned by companies such as Mitchells & Butlers, who employ a manager to run them and tend to display their own brand. Tenanted pubs are leased from companies such as Ei Group plc and Punch plc, who charge rents for the building but are ultimately managed by the landlords as their own business. The brands of beer and other beverages supplied however are also controlled by the company. Free houses are run independent of any company or brewery supplying them and are therefore free to sell whichever beers or alcoholic beverages they choose.
