social security expenditures in Japan was set at almost 36 trillion Japanese yen in 2020, a record high within the last decade. The Japanese archipelago is facing a rapidly aging society, in which pension and medical insurance expenditures for the elderly in particular are accounting for the largest share of the social security budget.
