Hydroelectricity generation in Canada 2020, by province

Quebec is by far the leading province for hydroelectric power generation in Canada. In 2020, approximately 195.08 terawatt hours of electricity had been generated from hydropower in the country's South-Eastern province. British Columbia followed at 63.24 terawatt hours of hydropower generation that year.

Since the development of hydropower facilities at the end of the 19th century, hydropower has gained to be the leading source of electricity across the country. In 2019, Canada's hydropower production was nearly 380 terawatt hours of energy. Canada had the fourth largest installed hydropower capacity as of 2020 and is expected to double its capacity in the future to reduce carbon emissions in order to meet the country’s greenhouse gas emissions targets.

Canada accounted for approximately nine percent of the world's hydropower consumption in 2020. The North American country is one of the world’s few net energy exporters, and most of the country’s energy exports are from hydropower. The clean electricity supplied by hydropower supports the growth of industry and infrastructure and brings jobs and development to communities.
