In 2022, the useful floor area of housing whose construction was authorized in Italy amounted to 5.3 million square meters. The surface of residential buildings authorized by permits declined a lot during the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008, from over 20 million square meters in 2005 to a quarter of that size in 2013.
