Mobile and PHS terminals collected for re-use Japan FY 2013-2021
In the fiscal year 2021, almost 3.9 million terminals from mobile and personal handy phone systems (PHS) were collected for recycling or re-use in Japan, down from around 6.7 million batteries in fiscal 2013.
The collection of mobile phones, batteries, and chargers is conducted by Mobile Recycling Network (MRN). MRN was established in 2001 by Telecommunications Carriers Association (TSA) in cooperation with major mobile carriers and manufacturers to improve the efficient use of materials in mobile phones and PHS devices. The network voluntarily collects used mobile and PHS terminals through retail outlets throughout Japan, regardless of carrier or manufacturer.
