In the first half of 2019, traditional reinsurance capital amounted to 517 billion U.S. dollars worldwide, whereas alternative reinsurance capital amounted to 93 billion U.S. dollars. However, the amount of alternative reinsurance capital has steadily risen since 2008. Alternative capital refers to capital from non-traditional sources, such as catastrophe bonds, pension funds, endowments, family offices, hedge funds and other private investors, rather than equity capital.
