Danish citizenship
Until 1953, Greenland was a Danish colony. It is still part of the Kingdom of Denmark but it has its own extensive local government and is not part of the European Union (unlike Denmark). Due to being part of Denmark, the vast majority of the inhabitants had Danish citizenship, amounting to approximately 55 thousand in 2021.
Municipalities
Greenland is organized in five administrative divisions. The capital Nuuk is in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, a municipality located on the coast in West and East Greenland. In 2021, more than 22 thousand inhabitants lived in this municipality, making this Greenland’s most populated municipality.
