A little over one million metric tons of green hydrogen have been produced worldwide between 2015 and 2018. Green hydrogen is generated through electrolysis using renewable electricity. By comparison, blue hydrogen is won from fossil fuels such as natural gas whereby emissions are captured and stored, resulting in it being carbon neutral. Blue hydrogen production is forecast to amount to 80 million metric tons by 2050, assuming governments will be implementing more stringent policies supporting the market for emission-free fuel sources. Hydrogen is of particular interest for the energy industry due to its broad usage area. It may serve as an alternative motor fuel, a means of storing and generating electricity and heat. The heating sector is the third largest consumer of hydrogen today.

* PE scenario refers to the "Planned Energy Scenario", which takes into account current governmental policies and targets as of 2019.
** TE scenario refers to "Transforming Energy Scenario", assuming governments will be adopting more ambitious policies in order to reach the Paris Agreement of minimizing carbon emissions and staying below a 2 degree Celsius global temperature rise.
