Average length of stay in hospital in Lithuania 2011-2021

The average length of stay for acute care patients in Lithuania decreased to 6.5 days since the previous year. This was the first time during the observed period that the average length of stay declined in Lithuania.
The average length of stay (ALOS) is one possibility to measure the efficiency of hospitals. It is calculated by dividing the total number of days inpatients stayed in a hospital during a year by the number of admissions or discharges. For health systems, shorter hospital stays represent an important way to reduce healthcare costs.
