Health care in Israel- statistics & facts
The health system in Israel is mainly public, and every Israeli citizen has the right to hold basic health insurance. However, many choose supplemental health insurance, which can cover additional costs. In Israel, four health maintenance organizations provide comprehensive healthcare: Clalit, Maccabi, Lehumit, and Meuhedet. The Largest of the four is Clalit; in 2022, its revenue slightly declined to over 727 million U.S. dollars. In 2023, Legatum Institute Foundation ranked Israel sixth in its list of countries with the best healthcare systems in the world.
Increasing burden in hospitals
Despite the high level of the health care system in Israel, hospitals in the country face significant difficulties. There is often a heavy load in the country's hospitals, and the number of beds is sometimes insufficient. Since 2013, the number of available hospital beds per 1,000 people has declined, amounting to 2.95 in 2023. The rate of natural increase in Israel is relatively high, therefore it is critical to ensure a sufficient number of hospital beds. In addition, A lack of standards for employee jobs in the hospitals also makes it difficult since there is a shortage of doctors and nurses in many hospitals. However, in the first seven months of 2022, the number of jobs rose slightly to 92,000 from 90,900 at the beginning of the year.A developing Israeli Health tech sector
An established health tech industry has been developing in Israel in recent years. Factors such as population growth and high life expectancy lead to the need for technological innovations that will benefit the health system and medical treatment efforts. The number of health tech companies in the country has gradually increased since 2015, and in 2022 it summed at 1,810. The sector has several vital industries, such as medical devices, pharma, and biotechnology. In the same year, the number of companies in the medical device industry reached 654, a slight rise compared to the previous year. This industry constituted the largest one within the MedTech sector.
