Industry revenue of “exterminating and pest control services“ in the U.S. 2011-2023

Although the rise in bedbugs and other insects across the U.S. is a major cause of concern for both home and business owners, it has been a boom for the exterminating and pest control industry. In fact, the North American region led the global pest control market in 2018, with revenues in the U.S. increasing by around fifty percent during 2011-2017. However, according to Statista’s latest estimates, the coming years will bring more challenges restricting market growth to below twenty percent by 2023.

Spread of bedbugs to unfamiliar places drives industry revenue

While bedbugs were traditionally limited to hotels and few residences in the past, the insects have now expanded their habitat to more unlikely spot , including office buildings, retail stores, movie theaters, and even airplanes. The increased occurrence of these pests led to an increase in the frequency of usage of insecticides during the period 2011-2018. Consequently, bedbug removal services, accounted for a significant share of the total pest control revenue as cited in a survey conducted by the University of Kentucky. In an interesting revelation by pest control service provider Orkin, most people from Baltimore were unlucky and got infested with bedbugs in 2018.

Pesticides export revenues are three times that of imports

The U.S. is among the top three pesticides exporting countries in the world. With nearly 3.9 billion U.S. dollars of revenue in 2017, the export market overshadowed the 1.3 billion U.S. dollars of imports that the country made in the same year.
