Number of outbound tourists from Romania 2010-2021

There were over 11.6 million outbound visitors from Romania in 2021, marking a significant increase from the previous year. When it comes to Romanian outbound tourism, the most common destination remained Europe, totaling over 459 thousand holidays and business trips in 2020.

Domestic tourism

Domestic tourism represents the most important component to Romania’s tourism industry. The number of domestic arrivals in tourist accommodations peaked in 2019 at approximately 10.7 million people. In 2021, Romanians took around 7.9 million trips within the country for holiday, leisure and recreation, and over 566 thousand trips for professional and business purposes as of 2018.

COVID-19 impact on tourism

The tourism industry was severely affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Romania in 2020. As a result, in April and May 2020, the number of tourist arrivals in accommodation units dropped by over 90 percent compared to 2019. This context led to more than 100 thousand contracts being postponed in the hospitality industry in spring 2020.
