In 2015, the Italian region where the water losses were highest was Sardinia, followed by Basilicata and Lazio. In these regions, only half of the drinking water volume reached end-users. Water leakage was caused by the aging distribution network, which was an issue in most of the national territory: considering the whole country, the average water losses amounted to 38 percent of the volume treated and put in the distribution system.
