Industrial water withdrawals worldwide by country

The industrial sector in the United States withdraws an estimated 210 billion cubic meters of water each year. This is more than any other country's industrial sector worldwide. China's industrial sector is ranked second, with estimated annual water withdrawals of 103 billion cubic meters. Industrial water withdrawals account for roughly 15 percent of total worldwide water withdrawals.

*Industrial water withdrawal Industrial water withdrawals includes self supplied water from renewable freshwater resources, over-abstraction of renewable or fossil groundwater, direct use of agricultural drainage water, direct use of (treated) wastewater, and desalinated water. This sector refers to self-supplied industries not connected to the public distribution network. Figures include water for the cooling of thermoelectric and nuclear power plants, but excludes hydropower. Water withdrawn by industries that are connected to the public supply network is generally included in municipal water withdrawal.
