In December 2022, the reported value of non-performing loans of the Chinese banking industry amounted to nearly three trillion yuan. The official NPL ratio at the same time was 1.63 percent. The Chinese banking system had been struggling with the quality of its assets for many years. State regulators and the Chinese central bank attempt to reduce the leverage of Chinese banks and limit the overall systematic risk.
