Libya: internally displaced persons 2021

As of February 2021, Tripoli hosted the highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Libya, corresponding to 43,725 people. IDPs refers to people who were forced to leave their home and remained within their country's borders. In Libya, the situation witnessed a significant improvement compared to the previous months, as over 32,000 persons were able to return home to their original place of origin during this period.

According to the source, "The number of returnees identified during this round of data collection increased to 623,219 returnees, compared to 604,965 returnees reported in the previous round. In line with the increases in returnees, the number of IDPs identified in Libya decreased to 245,483 individuals in Round 35".

Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are "persons or groups of persons who have been forced or obliged to flee or to leave their homes or places of habitual residence, in particular as a result of or in order to avoid the effects of armed conflict, situations of generalized violence, violations of human rights or natural or human-made disasters, and who have not crossed an internationally recognized State border” (United Nation's Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, 1998).
