Composition of AI research teams U.S. 2019

Close to one third of the top-tier artificial intelligence (AI) research teams currently working for institutions in the United States (US) were entirely composed of immigrants as of late 2019. This means that all researcher on the team received their undergraduate degree outside of the United States. Close to half of this group of AI research teams have a mixture of U.S.-origin researchers and those with an immigrant background.

The source adds: "“US AI research” is defined as research papers whose authors are all affiliated with institutions headquartered in the United States. “Immigrant researchers” are defined as researchers who completed their undergraduate studies in countries other than the United States, but who currently work for US institutions. “US-origin researchers” are those that completed their undergraduate studies in the United States.

The source has defined top-tier AI researchers as the top 20% of AI researchers with papers accepted at the Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) 2019 conference.
