Russia: bank card ownership share by payment system 2021

The majority of bank cards owned in Russia were connected to international payment systems, according to a survey conducted in 2021. Around 42 percent of bank cards belonged to the Russian payment system Mir.

* Mir is a Russian payment system, formalized in 2014 in collaboration with the Central Bank of Russia and World bank to overcome potential problems with electronic payments, after several Russian banks were denied US-based payment systems (Visa, Mastercard) due to sanctions regime. Bank cards belonging to Mir are primarily accepted by Russia-based companies, however, they are becoming popular among foreign companies as well.

The survey was conducted by tablet-assisted personal interview (TAPI).

The original survey question was worded as follows: "Какой платежной системы данная карта?". The question referred to a question regarding the primary bank card types used by respondents.
