In the fiscal year 2022, East Japan Railways (JR East) Company's Shinkansen high-speed railway trains realized approximately 16.5 billion passenger-kilometers, recovering from about 10.4 billion in the preceding year. JR East is the largest among the six passenger railway companies in Japan, formerly belonging to the state-owned Japanese National Railways (JNR). The company's railway system primarily serves the Kanto and Tohoku regions.
