In 2015, under the Paris Agreement, nearly every country in the world agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. In order to achieve this, global emissions should drop to 45 percent below 2010 levels by 2030, or 26.6 billion tons. Although countries have set more ambitious targets at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), pledges would still put the world on track to emit some 42 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2030.
