Global greenhouse gas emissions 1990-2019
Global greenhouse gas emissions increased 0.8 percent in 2019 to reach a high of 49.76 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e). Global greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 53 percent since 1990. CO2 accounts for roughly 75 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, and is the main driver of climate change. Annual atmospheric CO2 concentrations have soared in recent decades and reached a record high of 416.45 parts per million in 2021 - an increase of 17 percent compared with 1990 levels.
