French and European abstention rates in European elections 1979-2019
In forty years, the abstention rate in the elections for the European Parliament of the citizens of the European Union has increased by 13 points, and that of the French by more than ten points. With the exception of 2009 and 2019, the French abstention rate in this election is higher than that recorded in the EU. In 2019, half of French citizens registered to vote did not go to the polls, and this proportion reached 60 percent among French citizens under 35 years old.
