There were 320 active low-emission zones (LEZs) in European city regions as of June 2022 - an increase of 40 compared to the number of active LEZs in 2019. The number of clean air zones in Europe is expected to increase to more than 500 by 2025. Europe is also expected to see an uptake in the number of zero-emissions zones (ZEZs) in cities. Clean air zones restrict the number of polluting vehicles within an area, with the aim of reducing harmful air pollution, as well as lowering traffic. LEZs have been effective in cutting emissions of nitrogen oxides.
