Dry wells in California by quarter 2023

From 2013 to 2023, the largest number of dry wells in California reported to the Department of Water Resources' Dry Well Reporting System was recorded in the third quarter of 2022, at 723. The majority of the water shortages are inland and in the Southern counties. California is has been experiencing severe droughts in recent years that have resulted in reduced water levels at many major water resources in the state.

Primary use of wells include agriculture/irrigation, combination of household/agriculture, household, and other.

Due to the volunteer nature of the reporting, figures are often an under-representation of all dry wells that have occurred or dry wells that have been resolved. Reports are received from multiple sources and there are occasionally errors and omissions that can create duplicate entries. The reported dry wells are not always caused by drought, but also aging infrastructure like corroded wells, declining groundwater levels, changes to weather patterns and climate, or surface water and groundwater management.
