According to a survey on environmental perceptions conducted in March and April 2022 in New Zealand, the majority of 44 percent of respondents stated that the main cause of pressure on freshwater was sewage and stormwater. 40 percent of respondents claimed that farming also played a huge part in causing environmental damage. The third most influential cause was believed to be hazardous chemicals.
