Market capitalization of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) in Japan 2014-2023
As of December 2023, the combined market capitalization of companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) in Japan amounted to around 867.4 trillion Japanese yen, reaching a decade high.
Tokyo Stock Exchange
With close to 3.9 thousand listed companies and a trading value of around 872.6 trillion yen in 2022, the Tokyo Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange in Japan. It is operated by Japan Exchange Group, which was established in 2013 following the merger of Tokyo Stock Exchange Group and Osaka Securities Exchange. The company is one of the largest stock market operators in the world by market capitalization.
Reorganization of market segments
In April 2022, the TSE restructured its market segments. The stock exchange formerly consisted of four market divisions, which were reorganized into three; the Prime Market, where some of Japan’s largest corporations are listed, the Standard Market, and the Growth Market for startups and emerging companies. The change was made to reduce ambiguity about the concept of each market division and create incentives for listed companies to increase their corporate value.
