Germany: Where can public transport users save the most with the Deutschlandticket?

The introduction of the Deutschlandticket in Germany in May 2023 makes a new ticket available. It will be valid on all local and regional public transport across the country for 49 euros per month. The ticket is cheaper than many of the monthly subscription-based public transport tickets already available in many German cities. Among the cities where public transport users will be able to save the most are Frankfurt, Cologne and Bonn. The city with the largest savings when comparing the Deutschlandticket to the cost of a monthly pass in 2022 is Hamburg. Regular public transport users with a monthly pass for the Hamburg city area can save around 44.70 euros.

The source compared the cost of a monthly subscription public transport ticket in 2022 covering the relevant city area of all German cities of more than 200,000 inhabitants and state capitals with fewer than 200,000 inhabitants.

If transport operators offered discounts for the first months of a new subscription, the source used one twelfth of the total first year cost of the ticket as the basis for comparison.

*For Berlin the source used the regular monthly subscription ticket price, as the 29-Euro-Ticket that was available at the time was only a temporary offer.
