South Africa: number of contact crimes by type 2023

As of the fiscal year 2022/2023, the total number of contact crimes in South Africa amounted to 626,911 cases. Out of the four quarters in this period, the third quarter had the most worryingly high incidents in all areas of contact crime, with common assault accounting for almost 30 percent of the total contact crime reports. Moreover, murder and attempted murder rose to 7,555 and 7,016 cases, respectively. This averages around 82 murders and 76 attempted murders per day between October and December 2022.
