UK: share of illiquid pension fund assets 2022

From March 2020 through to the end of 2022, the level of illiquid assets was lower for private sector defined contribution schemes than that of the other two pension scheme types. Public sector defined and hybrid contribution schemes held the largest volume of illiquid assets, growing incrementally from 19 percent in 2020 to 23 percent by the end of 2022.

Defined benefit plans are protected, within certain limitations, by federal insurance provided through the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC). This is different from a defined contribution plan which does not promise a specific amount of benefits at retirement. A hybrid pension scheme is one which is neither a fully defined benefit (DB) scheme nor a fully defined contribution (DC).
