In 2023, food recorded the highest annual growth among major items in the Consumer Price Index in Japan at 8.1 percent. The CPI of fuel, light and water charges declined by 6.7 percent compared to the previous year.

The Consumer Price Index is compiled monthly to measure changes in various goods and services purchased by households all over Japan to analyze the movement of prices in time series. It is collected based on retail prices of each municipality and item obtained from the Retail Price Survey, using the Laspeyres-type formula. The year for the base and weights of the current index is 2020.
