Number of marriages in Greece 1980-2022
Approximately 43,400 marriages were registered in Greece in 2022, up 6.4 percent from the previous year. In general, the number of marriage registrations in the country was a decline over the observed period, with the minimum value recorded in 2020 during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In February 2024, the Greek government legalized same-sex marriage. The legislation was highly debated prior to its adoption, with the Orthodox Church representatives opposing the law.
