France: social security coverage for new immigrants

In France, in 2022, 81 percent of new immigrants were insured with the Social security, meanwhile two percent of them were not insured with any type of social insurance. In comparison, in 2020 there were 69 percent of the new immigrants who were insured with the Social security.

The Social security (Sécurité sociale in French) comprises a set of institutions whose function is to protect individuals from the consequences of various events or situations, generally referred to as social risks.

The State Medical Aid (Aide Médicale d'Etat in French) is a device allowing foreigners in an irregular situation to benefit from access to care. It is granted under conditions of residence and resources. To apply, a file must be completed, and once awarded, state medical assistance is granted for one year.

The universal health protection scheme, also called PUMa (Protection Universelle Maladie in French) covers healthcare costs without any break in entitlement. This coverage is guaranteed even in the event of a change in the professional situation (e.g. loss of employment), family situation (e.g. separation) or residence.
