Public opinion on financing and supplying military equipment for Ukraine in EU 2023

The European country which supports the EU's policy of financing and supplying military equipment to Ukraine in its war against Russia is Albania, with the most supportive EU countries being Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, and Poland, with over 85 percent of respondents in all of these countries agreeing with the policy. In contrast, Serbia was the European country with the most negative outlook on the policy with almost four-fifths of respondents in the South-Eastern European country disagreeing with the policy - Serbia is widely considered to be the most pro-Russia European country, apart from Belarus.

EU countries which are skeptical of the EU's policy of military aid to Ukraine include Cyrpus, Bulgaria, and Slovakia. Germany, the EU's largest economic power and perhaps the most important European supporter of Ukraine, has a geographical split in its opinion towards Ukraine, as two-thirds of West Germans agree with the policy, while only a third of East Germans do. This divide has its roots in the division of the country during the Cold War, when East Germany (the German Democratic Republic) was within the Soviet Union's sphere of influence, which has left a lasting effect in some East Germans' sympathy for Russia's position, or at least skepticism towards funding and arming Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
