France: arrests among demonstration participants 2023

In 2023, France went through an important movement of protests against the pension reform carried out by Emmanuel Macron's government. During the Spring of 2023, and especially following March 16 when Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne decided to make use of the 49.3 article of the Constitution, allowing to engage the government's responsibility and adopt the reform without facing the Parliament's vote, demonstrations were affected by violent acts. For instance, on March 23, 428 demonstration participants were arrested in France, and there were 540 on International Workers' Day, on May 1.

The source adds the following information: 1,818 arrests, were carried out following the demonstrations organized during the last five days of mobilization against the pension reform, however, this represented approximately half of the total number of arrests observed between March 16th, and May 3rd, 2023. Thus, 1,521 more individuals were arrested during “spontaneous” gatherings, undeclared or prohibited by the administrative authority, particularly during the evenings of March 16th, 18th, and 20th.
