Waste Management Inc. history and services
Waste Management Inc. is a comprehensive waste and environmental services company that was established in 1971. In the beginning, the three founders aggressively bought many smaller garbage collecting services and, by 1972, they had over 133 acquisitions in 19 U.S. states as well as Ontario and Quebec. When the company purchased the Service Corporation of America in 1980, Waste Management became one of the largest garbage collection companies in the United States. The company currently serves customers in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
Waste Management is now one of the largest waste management companies in the world, although it is outshone by France’s Veolia Environment and Suez Environment, who earned revenues of 29.03 billion U.S. dollars and 17.41 billion U.S. dollars, respectively, in 2014. Waste Management accrued operating revenues of just under 14 billion U.S. dollars in the same year.
Waste Management also owns and operates several waste-to-energy facilities and produces landfill-gas-to-energy, where methane and carbon dioxide gases emitted during the decomposition of organic waste in landfills are collected to generate electricity .The company spent over 1.4 billion U.S. dollars on selling, general, and administrative expenses in the 2014 financial year. The company also provides single-stream recycling, whereby recyclable materials do not have to be separated by the customer, which can often increase recycling rates.
