Russia's natural gas production 1998-2019

In 2019, Russia produced 679 billion cubic meters of natural gas, increasing the volume by approximately 10 billion cubic meters compared to the previous year. Thus, it ranked as the second leading producer of this fossil fuel worldwide in 2018.

How does COVID-19 affect the Russian natural gas production?

The global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic led to a decline in the U.S. natural gas prices and a higher demand for LNG, which meant increased competition for Russian energy producers. Furthermore, as forecast by Rystad Energy, European countries would decrease their natural gas demand due to the lockdown. Russia's major company in the industry, Gazprom expected its export volume to decrease by over 16 percent between 2019 and 2020 due to the pandemic.

How much natural gas does Russia export?

In 2018, Russia exported 223 billion cubic meters of natural gas via pipelines. The export volume of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the country reached nearly 25 billion cubic meters in the same year. The major export destination of the Russian natural gas was Germany, which accounted for approximately one quarter of the total export volume in 2019.

Supplementary notes

Does not include flare gas and recycling gas. The source points out that the above data are given in standard cubic meters (measured at 15 °C and 1,013 mbar) where possible. Since the data are converted by using a standard conversion factor derived directly from tonnes of oil equivalent, the given amount may not equal the amount of gas mentioned in the respective country statistics.
Figures for years not included in the pdf version were taken from the Data workbook of the Statistical Review.
