Cement industry in India – additional information
One of the most commonly used building materials in the residential and non-residential construction industry is cement. Aside from its use as a binder, cement is also a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco and most non-specialty grouts. There are several different types of cement which vary in composition and their end-use purposes. Requirements given by various construction projects often determine the cement types used, based on performance or placement conditions. Quick setting cement, for example, consists of small amounts of aluminum and sulphate and is used in works that must be completed in a short period of time.
In the past five years, the cement production in India grew from 207 million metric tons in 2010 up to 283 million in 2016, making it the second largest cement producer globally. With construction expenditures of around 427 billion U.S. dollars, India is fourth largest construction market worldwide. According to the India Brand Equity Foundation, India’s cement production is projected to amount to just over 400 million metric tons by 2017. One of the largest cement producers in India is UltraTech Ltd., which is headquartered in Mumbai. UltraTech Ltd. is specialized in manufacturing Portland cement, one of the most common types of cement for general use around the world.
