For workers under the age of 18 the national minimum wage in the United Kingdom was 4.35 British pounds per hour as of 2019. This is an increase of 71 pence when compared with 2010 when the minimum wage for this age group was 3.64 pounds.

Older workers earn higher minimum wage

After workers in the United Kingdom turn eighteen, they can expect a higher minimum wage than they received previously. In 2019 workers between the ages of 18 and 20 received at least 6.15 pounds per hour while employees who were aged between 21 and 24 received a minimum of 7.70 British pounds an hour. In 2020, employees aged between 21 and 24 received a minimum of 8.2 British pounds an hour.

Forecasts and the living wage

The National Living Wage is the name given to the minimum wage for all workers over the age of 25, which in 2020 amounted to 8.65 pounds an hour. This is expected to rise to 8.89 pounds in 2021. By 2023 it is expected that the National Minimum Wage for those aged between 21 and 24 will be 8.50 pounds an hour and the National Living Wage will be 9.46 pounds per hour.
