Research and development spending as share of GDP in Spain 2000-2016 This statistic shows the gross domestic expenditure on research and development (GERD) as a percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP) in Spain from 2000 to 2016. Over the reported period, the GERD share rose by a total of 0.31 percent, peaking in 2009 and 2010, when gross expenditure on research and development accounted for 1.35 percent of Spain's GDP. In 2015, the ratio was 1.22 percent and it was significantly lower than other developed European countries such as Austria and Germany.
