Solar capacity in India – additional information

Solar photovoltaic (PV) power demand in India has been increasing exponentially as has its rate of development, positioning this renewable source as a viable option in a country where a sizeable part of the population still lives without electricity. Although India only came in 9th out of the top 10 countries based on cumulative solar PV capacity at the end of 2015, the Indian government was determined to expand its solar plans. As of May 2016, India's Charanka Solar Park represented one of the world’s largest solar photovoltaic power plant with a capacity of 345 megawatts. In 2016, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu surpassed Gujarat to be the Indian states with the highest installed capacity of utility-scale solar.

The take-off of solar PV in India can be seen by its projected cumulative utility-scale solar power capacity which is expected to increase by nearly twofold from 2016 to 8,200 megawatts in 2018. As of 2016, around 320 megawatts of installed capacity was in the commercial sector, while about 420 megawatts were in the industrial sector, and 350 megawatts in the residential sector. With the assistance of subsidies, the solar PV installation sector in India continues to grow. Solar rooftop capacity additions in India are expected to rise from 640 megawatts in 2016 to more than 2,300 megawatts in 2020.
