U.S. base overnight costs of power plants by technology 2019

This statistic displays the base overnight costs of power plants in the United States as of 2019, broken down by major technology. During this year, a biomass plant had base overnight costs of approximately 4,080 U.S. dollars per kilowatt. Overnight costs refer to the cost of constructing the power plant if no interest rates were incurred during the construction process.

Supplementary notes

* 2019 U.S. dollars.
** Cost in terms of net AC power available to grid for installed capacity.
*** Cost and performance characteristics are site-specific, so costs represent least expensive plant that can be built in the Northwest Power Pool region, where most proposed sites are located.
**** Wind and both solar PV technologies' total overnight cost shows the average input value across all 22 electricity market regions, as weighted by the respective capacity of that type installed during 2018 in each region to account for the substantial regional variation in wind and solar costs. The input value used for wind in AEO2019 was $1,920 per kilowatt (kW), solar PV with tracking was $2,160/kW, and solar PV fixed tilt was $2,024, representing the cost of building a plant excluding regional factors. Region-specific factors contributing to the substantial regional variation in cost include differences in typical project size across regions, accessibility of resources, and variation in labor and other construction costs through the country.
