ProRail is a government organization that maintains the national railway network infrastructure in the Netherlands (not metro or tram) and is part of the NS Railinfratrust (Dutch railway infrastructure owner). ProRail’s total revenue amounted to approximately 1.26 billion euros in 2018. From the total revenue 340 million euros came from usage fees, which are fees paid by railway carriers when they use the railway network. Looking at the total revenue between 2012 and 2015, it decreased from 1.24 billion euros in 2012 to 1.2 billion euros in 2015. In 2018, ProRail registered a total revenue of roughly 1.26 billion euros.

Prorail’s operating costs

Examining the operating costs of ProRail, a large part of the income went to low-scale maintenance. As of 2018, this type of maintenance had cost the company a little more than 265 million euros, a slight decrease in costs compared to the previous year. Large-scale maintenances costs amounted to roughly 130 million euros in 2018.

Revenue of NS Group

NS Group (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) is the largest passenger railway operator in the Netherlands, offering rail services in the United Kingdom and Germany as well. As of 2018, NS Group generated a revenue of approximately six billion euros. This is the highest value reached between 2008 and 2018.
