Vidhan Sabha election votes share in Uttar Pradesh, India - by political party 2017
Why U.P. matters
Uttar Pradesh is India’s largest state, with a population density of over 829 people per square kilometer, and was considered the heartland of the Hindi-speaking belt in the country. About 80 of the 543 parliamentary seats are reserved for elected representatives from this state. This was for this largest state, out of the other 27 states and nine union territories, making it a pivotal game-changer for the country’s political stage.
Electoral power
In the 2019 general assembly elections , Uttar Pradesh had over 14 million electors registered to vote, and the voter turnout was estimated to be around 62 percent. Just like the landslide victory in the 2017 Legislative Assembly elections in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party won by a heavy margin in the 2019 elections as well.
