This statistic shows the technical results of the insurance sector in the Netherlands from 2012 to 2020, by insurance branch (in percent of gross earned premiums). In 2020, the result of the life insurance branch in the Netherlands increased when compared to the previous year reached a positive value of 23 percent of earned premiums.
The insurance industry in the Netherlands knows many different companies and branches. The Dutch health insurance system alone already combines elements of public and private insurance. In 2021, Dutch health insurance concern Achmea had a market share of approximately 24.1 percent.
Due to the artificially low interest rates of the European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy, Dutch insurance companies struggle to make profits, as their investments become less valuable. Also, they have to compensate more money to their insured, for example because of damage due to extreme weather conditions or the ageing of the population.
