South Korea: number of buildings by type 2022

In 2022, around 4.58 million buildings in South Korea were residential buildings, while around 1.34 million buildings were built for commercial purposes.

Residential buildings

The number of residential buildings was increasing in recent years until 2019, while the number of construction permits for residential buildings has been fluctuating in the past decade. Among all provinces in South Korea, Gyeonggi province saw the highest number of residential buildings.

Apartment buildings

Especially in urban areas, many South Koreans are living in apartments. On average, more than half of all households were living in apartments, with the share increasing over the past decade. Due to the high population density, high-rise residential buildings are typical for urban areas.
