Most important environmental issues in Spain 2019

According to the results of a survey conducted by Ipsos in March 2019, over 50 percent of Spaniards believed that global warming or climate change is one of the top three environmental issues facing Spain, followed by air pollution (41 percent) and waste management (35 percent). By contrast, only seven percent of respondents believe soil erosion to be a top three environmental issue.

CO2 emission curbs in Spain

There is no denial of the fact that global warming is happening in front of our eyes: ice sheets in the Arctic are melting and the extreme weather events becomes more and more unpredictable shifting. Many countries are trying to react and have set ambitious plans in order to reduce CO2 emissions before it’s too late. Spain, for example, has reduced its CO2 emissions over the recent years from approximately 379 million metric tons of CO2 down to roughly 302 million metric tons in 2017. In the European context, Germany was the biggest polluter, with its CO2 emissions amounting to 664.3 metric tons in 2017.

Greenhouse emissions in Spain

Despite managing to cut greenhouse gas emissions produced as a result of energy generation, the energy sector is still responsible for most of the greenhouse gas emissions in Spain. For example, in 2016, the sector generated the equivalent of 244 million tons of CO2. Other sectors such as manufacturing and construction, as well as agriculture, also saw a remarkable impressive 30-million-ton decrease in their CO2 emissions. Unfortunately, as data show, the efforts of these sectors were not as successful and the results not as impressive.

* The original question was worded by the source as follows: " In your view, what are the three most important environmental issues facing Spain today? That is, the top environmental issues you feel should receive the greatest attention from your local leaders?"
** Respondents from 27 countries around the world. Approximately 1,000 individuals aged between 16 and 74 years were surveyed in Spain.
Where results do not sum to 100 or the ‘difference’ appears to be+-1 more/less than the actual, this may be due to rounding, multiple responses or the exclusion of don't knows or not stated responses.
