Where do consumers in the United States prefer to shop for a new mattress? Recent surveys point to mattress stores as the most popular place to purchase a new mattress, across all income levels and age groups. Perhaps this is unsurprising when one considers the ubiquity of radio and television advertisements for mattress stores all across America, with each store promoting multiple blowout sales per year with special deals on top mattress brands.
Most consumers in the United States have also been open-minded about purchasing their new mattress online and having it delivered to their home, but unfortunately only 38 percent of mattress retailers sell online. Between 2007 and 2016, the expected cost of a quality mattress in the United States increased, from 929 dollars to 1,110 dollars; perhaps pointing to consumers developing more expensive taste in mattresses.
In 2017, queen size mattresses were by far the most purchased mattress type in the United States, the with over 20 percent falling into the 300 and 499 U.S. dollar price range. There have been many innovations in the mattress industry, such as latex, cold foam, and memory foam mattresses; but the classic and affordable spring mattress is still the most popular. A 2016 survey found that U.S. consumers consider the comfort and support of the mattress to be the most important factor when shopping for a mattress, followed by free delivery and non-pushy salespeople in the store.
