Number of countries with women in highest position of executive power 1960-2024

Sep 12, 2024 | Politics & Government

The highest position of executive power has been held by a woman in just 62 countries since 1960. Since Sirimavo Bandaranaike was first elected Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 1960, the number of women in power has grown slowly, with the fastest growth coming in the past 15 years. As of September 2024, there were 11 countries led by women, with Mexico electing their first female president in 2024, while long-serving figures such as Shiekh Hasina of Bangladesh and Katrín Jakobsdóttir of Iceland have left office. Despite growing numbers of women leaders decades, there has never been more than 17 countries with women in the highest positions of power in a single year, which is less than 10% of the number of men who have held these positions (as today, there are 193 UN member states).

Records

The women who have served the longest consecutive terms in these positions are Angela Merkel of Germany (16 years, 16 days), Dame Eugenia Charles of Dominica (14 years, 328 days), and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia (12 years, 6 days). The longest combined non-consecutive terms were held by Indira Gandhi of India (16 years, 15 days) and Bangladesh's Sheikh Hasina (20 years, 234 days). Just 14 countries have had more than one woman in the highest position of executive power, and most of these countries can be found either in the Indian sub-continent or in Europe. Of these 14, Finland, Moldova, New Zealand, and the UK are the only countries to have had three female leaders, although the unique federal system of Switzerland has had five women serve in nine annual-terms as President of the Swiss Confederation.

The first woman Prime Minister

The first democratically elected female Prime Minister was Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka, who took over the leadership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party when her husband was assassinated in 1959. Bandaranaike successfully led her party to victory in three elections, in 1960, 1970 and 1994, however constitutional changes in the 1980s meant that her final term as Prime Minister was spent in a more ceremonial role, while the President now held the real executive power (although the President at this time was also a woman; Bandaranaike's daughter, Chandrika Kumaratunga).

U.S. inflation rate versus wage growth 2020-2024

Sep 13, 2024 | Key Economic Indicators

In August 2024, inflation amounted to 2.5 percent, while wages grew by 4.6 percent. The inflation rate has not exceeded the rate of wage growth since January 2023.

Inflation in 2022

The high rates of inflation in 2022 meant that the real terms value of American wages took a hit. Many Americans report feelings of concern over the economy and a worsening of their financial situation. The inflation situation in the United States is one that was experienced globally in 2022, mainly due to COVID-19 related supply chain constraints and disruption due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The monthly inflation rate for the U.S. reached a 40 year high in June 2022 at 9.1 percent, and annual inflation for 2022 reached eight percent. Without appropriate wage increases, Americans will continue to see a decline in their purchasing power.

Wages in the U.S.

Despite the level of wage growth reaching 6.7 percent in the summer of 2022, it has not been enough to curb the impact of even higher inflation rates. The federally mandated minimum wage in the United States has not increased since 2009, meaning that individuals working minimum wage jobs have taken a real terms pay cut for the last twelve years. There are discrepancies between states - the minimum wage in California can be as high as 15.50 U.S. dollars per hour, while a business in Oklahoma may be as low as two U.S. dollars per hour. However, even the higher wage rates in states like California and Washington may be lacking - one analysis found that if minimum wage had kept up with productivity, the minimum hourly wage in the U.S. should have been 22.88 dollars per hour in 2021. Additionally, the impact of decreased purchasing power due to inflation will impact different parts of society in different ways with stark contrast in average wages due to both gender and race.

Largest companies by market capitalization Singapore 2024

Sep 11, 2024 | Business Enterprise

As of September 11, 2024, the largest company in Singapore is the DBS Group, with a market capitalization of 81.33 billion Singapore dollars. The largest three companies in Singapore by market capitalization were two of its largest banks, followed by consumer internet company Sea Limited.

DBS, OCBC, and UOB - stalwarts of Singapore’s financial sector

Singapore’s three largest banking groups – DBS Group, OCBC, and UOB, are seen as stable stock market investments. They routinely make up the top three leading companies by market capitalization and rank consistently among the most valuable brands in Singapore. Despite the global economic turmoil, these three banks were forecast to turn profits in 2023, being among the biggest beneficiaries of rising interest rates in the Asia-Pacific region. Singapore is a leading financial hub in the Asia-Pacific region, and its financial sector makes up the third-largest sector of its economy.

Sea Limited and Grab - volatility of tech companies in the stock market

Among the largest companies in Singapore are two of its biggest tech companies, Sea Limited and Grab Holdings. Sea Limited operates the e-commerce marketplace Shopee and online gaming company Garena, while Grab Holdings is a super-app that provides ride-hailing, food delivery, and digital payment services. Despite the popularity of their services, both companies have faced a turbulent year, with Grab Holdings seeing their share prices drop during the first day of trading. Once valued more than DBS, OCBC, and UOB combined, Sea Limited saw its valuation drop in 2022 amidst net losses of around two billion U.S. dollars in 2021.

Market share of electric vehicles in Norway 2009-2023

Sep 16, 2024 | Passenger Cars

In 2023, about 90 percent of all cars sold in Norway were electric cars, including battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). This share represents a sharp increase compared to the pre-pandemic EV sales share, which stood at 53.4 percent in 2019.

Renewables powering Norway's cars

Not only does Norway outperform other countries in terms of electric vehicles as a share of car sales, but also almost all of Norway’s domestic electricity comes from hydropower. For Norway, incentives in favor of green travel, such as toll-free travel, electric roads, and priority parking for electric vehicles, date back several years. Car brands must navigate a competitive industry in the country when it comes to the penetration rate of their EV models.

Cuts for emissions

With future restrictions penalizing the sale of new cars running only on petrol or diesel, the race is on worldwide for EV manufacturers to lower the greenhouse gas emissions their models release into the atmosphere. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the size of the global market for electric vehicles is tipped to grow substantially over the coming years. Worldwide plug-in electric vehicle sales reached around 13.7 million units in 2023.

Voting intention in a referendum on Scottish independence 2018-2024

Sep 17, 2024 | Elections

As of August 2024, 56 percent of adults in Scotland said they would not support Scotland being independent from the United Kingdom, compared with 44 percent who would support it. Support for Scottish independence reached 53 percent in August 2020, the highest level of support for independence in the provided time period. The highest opposition to independence was in January 2018, when 57 percent of people in Scotland advised they would vote no in a hypothetical referendum.

Independence rejected in the 2014 referendum

The last referendum on Scottish independence took place in September 2014, with 55 percent of Scotland voting 'No' to independence, compared to 45.5 percent who voted 'Yes'. An optimistic 'Yes' campaign was led by Alex Salmond, the leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP); who had overseen his party increase their vote share in Westminster and achieve an overall majority in the Scottish Parliament in 2011. The following year, the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, granted the Scottish Parliament the authority to hold the independence referendum, which would be held in 2014. Cameron, and various other UK politicians such as Gordon Brown led the ultimately successful 'No' campaign, painting independence as too much of an economic risk for Scotland.

Scotland and Brexit

In the aftermath of the referendum, Alex Salmond resigned as First Minister of Scotland. Although he was on the winning side of the Scottish independence referendum, David Cameron’s would share Salmond’s fate less than two years later when he campaigned for the UK to remain in the EU and end up on the losing side of the Brexit referendum. For Scotland, Brexit gave renewed impetus to the question of Scottish independence. Except for London, all regions of England, along with Wales had voted to take the UK out of Europe, while Scotland, along with Northern Ireland voted to stay in the EU. While this represented a significant change in Scotland’s relationship with the rest of the UK, advocates for Scottish independence have been unable to obtain consent from Westminster to hold a second referendum.
