Industry revenue of “manufacture of plastics in primary forms“ in Spain 2012-2024

Revenues of the Spanish primary plastics manufacturing industry are expected to only grow marginally from 10.4 U.S. dollars in 2018 to 10.6 U.S. dollars by 2024. Some of the key reasons for this include the falling demand for plastics due to a rise in sustainable alternatives and growing environmental campaigns discouraging the use of plastic products. In fact, the EU has approved a new law banning the use of single-plastic items which is expected to come into force by 2021, further adding to the industries’ woes. Leading supermarket chains in the country such as Mercadona and Carrefour have already replaced plastic with cotton mesh and raffia bags in an aim to reduce household plastic waste and others are expected to follow in the medium term. This has also resulted in an 18 percent reduction in the number of enterprises manufacturing plastic products between 2008-2017.

Repsol Quimica SA and the Spanish subsidiary of Dow chemicals, Dow Chemical Iberia, are two of the leading companies in primary plastics manufacturing in the country. Interestingly, Dow Chemicals has recently launched a new resin made with 70 percent recycled plastic and is focusing on manufacturing petrochemical feedstocks from plastic waste in a bid to drive their sales.
