Dubai: composite business confidence index of firms 2019

According to a survey conducted in Dubai in 2019, the composite business index (BCI) amounted to 129.8 points in the third quarter of 2019, up from 114.9 points in the second quarter of 2019. In the same survey, large companies had a BCI of 135.6 points, while SMEs had a BCI of 121.1 points.

According to the source, the sample included small, medium and large enterprises. The companies cover manufacturing, trading, and services sectors.

The business confidence interval (BCI) is calculated as a weighted average score of selling prices, volumes sold, number of employees and profits indicators.

For each of these indicators, the net balance method is used to calculate resulting scores. The net balance method is the percentage of negative responses subtracted from the percentage of positive responses, added by one hundred.

Then, the resulting scores are multiplied by their respective weights. Finally, the index is weighted by the companies' size with respect to Dubai's GDP, where large enterprises are multiplied by 60 percent and SMEs are multiplied by 40 percent.

If the BCI is less than 100, business expectations are interpreted as negative. If it is equal to 100, business expectations are considered stable, and if it is more than 100, business expectations are positive.
